THE LEARNING CENTER!

      The Learning Center! Charter School

                                                                 Mary Jo Dyre, Director

Welcome to the North Carolina School Report Card Snapshot for the 2010-2011 school year.  This document contains information about our school in condensed form including school safety, instructional and technology resources, teacher quality, class size, student attendance, and student performance on the North Carolina End-of-Grade tests.  There is one error on the report card that I want to address.  The report card indicates that only 82% of our teachers were fully licensed and this is incorrect.  All of our teachers were, and continue to be fully licensed by the state of North Carolina.  To view the entire report visit www.ncreportcards.org.  Please contact me if you have any questions or comments about this report.

We embark on a new school year excited about changes on the educational horizon as schools across the state begin to implement the Common Core in English/Language Arts and Math and the new Essential Standards is other subjects that are similar in design to the Common Core Standards.  The Common Core Standards have a strong focus on critical thinking skills and in-depth learning and will be taught making connections between all subjects, especially math and science, but also writing/language arts, social studies, etc.

Significant changes in student assessment are also coming.  Student achievement will no longer be determined by summative assessments (EOGs) only.  Student growth will be measured using three types of assessments- formative, benchmark and summative.  Formative assessments will include teacher observation, peer observation and student self evaluation.  Benchmark assessments will track individual student growth by strand and provide valuable information that will help teachers differentiate instruction to challenge all types of learners.  Summative assessments based on the new standards are still under development, but we have been told to expect changes in their format.

We believe very strongly that the Common Core approach is a more effective way to move students ahead academically and that using a variety of evaluation instruments will provide a much more accurate assessment of student growth and competence.  Please contact us with any questions, or visit the Common Core website for more information at www.corestandards.org/frequently-asked-questions.

We are grateful to you, our parents, for making the decision to entrust us with your child’s education, for being a part of the team that provides each child with the best possible education, and for the countless volunteer hours you contribute.
