All About Apples

Second graders have been studying apples recently and finished up the unit with a field work trip to Hillcrest Orchards in Ellijay, GA. At the orchard they:
Had a lesson on how the orchard operates, how apple trees grow and produce apples
Shucked corn
Milked Buttercup, the cow
Enjoyed a hayride
Viewed Barney the Bull Show- taught students all about cows
Experienced the petting zoo
Played on the Pig Races Playground

As part of their apple unit students read about Johnny Appleseed and learned to identify exaggerations, myths and factual information found in tall tales. They learned about the life cycle of an apple in science. They also did apple science experiments where they tried to predict which liquid would keep an apple from turning brown- milk, lemon juice, water, soda.

Second graders even took their study of apples to math class by measuring and figuring fractions when cooking crockpot applesauce!
