With the addition of 9th grade for the 2021-22 school year and 10th, 11th, and 12th grades following in the next three years, the Learning Center charter school has officially added athletics to the school program offerings.
The school has had a wrestling club since 2018. However, this year the school has added an official Athletic Department headed by Athletic Director, Mike Catuto. The school will offer cross country, wrestling, and track in its inaugural year.
The school will field middle school teams consisting of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. The high school teams will consist of 9th grade students this school year and add 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in the next three years.
The school will compete in local and surrounding county competitions for the required number of years until they can officially become part of the Smoky Mountain Conference.
Catuto has extensive athletic experience both as an athlete himself as well as coaching youth sports. He is an Accredited Interscholastic Coach through the National Federation of State High School Associations. Catuto will continue to coach the wrestling team this winter and has already begun coaching the cross country teams along with some assistance by school alumni students who run at TCEC.
“I know we have a great amount of athletic talent at our school and I am excited for the students to compete in North Carolina,” said Catuto.
