Eighth Grade Works With Indigo Dye

Eighth grade students made an indigo dye pot as an interdisciplinary STEAM project. Students learned the history of textiles and indigo production in the Carolinas and then applied their understanding in Science class by producing an indigo pot. We watched as the chemical reaction changed the color of our dye from blue to brown to green to blue again. Students used their math skills to figure out the ratios of reactants they would need to make the pot work. We used regular glue to “batik” white cotton t-shirts and everyone took home a personalized indigo piece.
