Garden Based Learning

Fourth graders enjoyed their garden based learning class this past school year. They saw the garden go through three seasons and harvested many yummy spring greens including: kale, chard, spinach and lettuce.  Students picked fresh peas, planted potatoes, beans, and tomatoes for summer. Here the students were learning about pest management by hand picking off potato beetle larvae so as to ensure strong growing and producing plants.  Throughout the year students discussed how small scale gardening can afford environmentally safe systems of pest control without relying on chemical pesticides.  Additionally, students assisted in fertilizing the garden by turning our school compost pile!
