Seed to Salad

Ms. Debby graciously offered a fun lesson to the first grade science class recently.  She introduced the concepts of planting seeds by reading a children’s book discussing how each type of seed needs certain conditions to grow in.  Students then went outside and planted lettuce seeds in the garden.  Students reviewed the basic needs all plants must have met in order to grow: sun, water, soil, and nutrients.  Additionally, they learned that lettuce seeds are unique in that they need to sit on top of the soil for a small amount of time and have the sun shine directly on them in order to germinate.  Students have been watching the garden closely to see how their seeds are doing.  Ms. Debby will come back in several weeks and show the students what yummy food can be made with their homegrown lettuce!
