The class trip is part of the school’s VENTURE OUT cross-curricular travel-study program that weaves literature, science and history with travel and real life experiences. The VENTURE OUT program promotes trips to places and people of interest across the Mountain Region of North Carolina. The annual Upper Grades Class Trip branches out to include travel destinations such as New York City, North Carolina, Charleston SC, Savannah, and New Orleans and Atlanta.

Some highlights of the 2013 trip included New Bern, NC, Fort Macon, an “Inner Sea Expedition” via Carolina Ocean Studies, ferry rides to Cedar and Okracoke Islands, the Wright Brothers’ Memorial, a beach cookout and a stop at the Natural History Museum in Raleigh, NC.

As our students were exploring the Barrier Island,” recalled school director, Mary Jo Dyre, “I will never forget the excitement as one of our students shouted out, ‘There are the horses!’  In the group of horses was the newest colt born to the island.

Students worked to raise money for the trip throughout the year by selling tickets to a spaghetti dinner, selling flower bulbs, raffle tickets and food at events. Visit our blog: or FaceBook: TLCGrowZonePage. Email us at
