Electives

We have some wonderful opportunities available for our students as elective courses.
The elective program is available Tuesday thru Thursday.

All 5th thru 8th graders get to select ONE elective from a variety of choices every 9-week grading period. The electives offered vary each 9-weeks. A sampling of what we offer is, Drawing & Painting, Fusion Ensemble, Drama, Needle Work and Trail Blazers. See some of the course descriptions below. Electives offered in the past have included Technology Club, Scrapbooking, Health & Beauty, Weaving, Crochet, Chef's Assistant, Geography Bowl.
Each Semester our student's look forward what may pop up for this years elective. Check here throughout the year for what new elective we may dream up!!

Drama: Want to be a part of a real live play at the Henn Theatre? This elective will include many possibilities of interest; acting, singing, set design, tech support, and costume design. Interested students with musical talents will also help in the production of our plays and the annual Spring Concert. Depending on the students' specific interests, instructors will help students to prep for auditions and develop fundamental skills of acting and singing. Additionally instructors will involve students in the "engineering and technology" behind the set design. For those with a love of customs, you will work alongside a designer/seamstress to help with the costume needs of the production. Fusion: An Ensemble Experience: This fall we will once again return to the basics of music and learning some music theory, notation and dynamics while focusing on learning songs for our Veteran's Day program and the Tree Lighting ceremony. As time allows, we will also learn some additional holiday songs for a lunch time holiday concert before leaving for the Christmas break. You do not have to participate in this same elective next semester. Judy Coleman, Instructor, Dining Commons.

Ready, SET, Go! Monster Mash Set Production, Chorus Performance Props and Christmas Float Design:
If you have the artistic flare that longs to create the amazing set designs in our annual Monster Mash and other seasonal school events, come be a part this elective.

Crafty Lady Crochet: Learn basic crochet stitches and turn these into beautiful projects. Possibilities include: scarves, hats and small afghans. Student projects are to be chosen by the students and facilitated to completion by the instructor. (Note: $5.00 Supply Fee) Carol Jean Smith, Instructor.

Trail Blazers: Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was our nature trail. Trailblazers is an ongoing project that gives students the opportunity to get outside and engage in physical activity while learning about and developing a greater appreciation of nature. This year we will focus on honing up our observation skills by spending some time during every class quietly looking at some aspect of nature or just listening. We will resume our work of maintaining the trail, the creek bank, and the adjoining areas by removal of fallen limbs, debris, and invasive plants. Additional stonework will be added to the fire pit constructed by students last year and benches will be placed around it to make it more user-friendly. The berries that have been planted will be staked, fertilized, and mulched to increase productivity. Attractive weather-proof signs will be created to identify the variety of wildflowers, trees, and even poisonous plants along the trail, and interesting information such as medicinal uses and alternate names will be posted. This is not an elective for the squeamish or the faint of heart. If you are not afraid of bugs, dirt, or hard work, this is the elective for you

Yearbook: Interested 7th and 8th grade students at TLC! are offered the chance to apply to be a member of the yearbook staff. Spots are limited so only students who show true interest and ability are accepted. Yearbook staffers do everything involved in creating the annual yearbook for our school . . . from selling ad space to help keep the costs of the books low, to capturing daily and special happenings on digital camera to designing layouts and creating the pages that ultimately appear in the yearbook. This elective is offered the first semester each year and students work both during elective time and at home or elsewhere from a high speed internet connection.
