Garden Based Learning
Teacher-lead classes that promote gardening across the curriculum as well as offering hands-on gardening experience to our students.
This gardening program is one aspect of the much larger Far Out Foods Venture, "serving westernmost North Carolina and beyond."
The Far Out Foods Venture project is underway with the help of connections made possible through
the
TOLC!
We can't talk about Garden Based Learning and not talk about TOLC! here at The Learning Center!
Garden Based Learning has stretched beyond our BIG DREAMS with this outdoor learning area we have created here at TLC!.
Educators have used the outdoors for teaching, gardening, and physical education for more than 100
years. As computers dominate the focus of social interaction, children are becoming distanced from nature.
We are not only brining them back to nature but using the outdoors in our cirriculumn, giving our students a more
flexible learning environment with greater educational options overall. Some of our spaces include:
1. Nature Space: Great place for free or gently-guided imaginative outdoor play
2. Gazebo: Perfect for gathering your students in for various reasons.
3. Hemlock Story Tree/Reading Circle and Council Area: Endless possibilities for all subjects, including opportunities
for Character Education.
4. Spring House: A history lesson.
5. SMALL Fish and Frog Pond: Science, Social Studies and more!
6. Down by the Riverside Outdoor Classroom: Endless possibilities.
